Costa da Lagoa Hiking Trail

The Costa da Lagoa trail is a historic path used for centuries by the Azorean fishing villages on the west shore of Lagoa da Conceição. Together with the boat, it is still the only way to reach the community. Itinerary: • Meeting and safety briefing at the trailhead in Canto dos Araçás. • Hike of about 6 to 7 km on a well-marked trail with gentle ups and downs, Atlantic Forest shade and lagoon viewpoints. • Pass by villages, historic houses, flour mills and colonial ruins. • Stop for a swim at the Costa waterfall. • Free time for lunch at lakeside restaurants. • Boat ride back across Lagoa da Conceição to Centrinho. For those who want nature, history and local culture in one day, with moderate effort.

What to bring

  • Trail shoes or boots with good grip
  • At least 1.5 liters of water
  • Light snack (fruit, nuts, cereal bar)

Important information

  • Moderate effort: about 6 to 7 km with gentle climbs and descents
  • Minimum age 8; minors must be with a guardian
  • Arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes early
  • Some rocky and rooty stretches get slippery after rain
  • The trail crosses forest: watch for insects and wildlife and stay on the path
  • In heavy rain, the departure may be rescheduled or refunded per the cancellation policy
  • Take your trash with you and respect the residents
